What is a Digital Agency and Your Role In It?

A digital agency helps a client expand their online presence. It really boils down to two things:

  1. Setting up a website
  2. Marketing the website

If they already have website, a digital agency will try to make it better by updating the design, optimizing performance, or securing their site.

As for marketing, there’s always room to help a company improve. People and technology are constantly changing. In order to successfully bring in new customers, companies need to be using methods that work in today’s environment.

SEO, PPC, Facebook Ads, Content Marketing all fall under marketing and there isn’t a one size fits all solution. Each company will have a different budget and different goals for their marketing plan.

A digital agency will help companies come up with a marketing strategy that fits their budget and their business. If the company likes the strategy, they can either implement it themselves or hire the digital agency to execute it for them.

So, if you’re just starting out, this might seem overwhelming. You might be thinking, “I’m not a designer or marketer, I can’t do anything of these things. I don’t know anything about this stuff.”

Your role in a Digital Agency

When starting your own digital agency, your role should not be designer, programmer, or marketer if you want to scale the business. If you approach running any business this way, you will get overwhelmed and burn out.

You should be a delegator or facilitator. You don’t want to get in the habit of trying to do everything yourself.

If you were opening a restaurant, you wouldn’t be able to greet customers, take orders, cook the food, and run all the finances. That would be a terrible experience for yourself and for your customers.

Instead, you would delegate certain aspects of the business to other people. You would hire cooks and waiters. You would hire someone qualified to keep track of your books. Running a digital agency is no different.

However, if you’re just starting out, your main role will be to find new clients. Finding new clients is actually quite easy. There is a massive market of people who need help with their websites and marketing.

After you land a few clients, people will start contacting you. You won’t even need to actively try to find people to work with.

Once you’re generating cashflow, you can then hire people to go out and land clients for you. At that point, you’ll be one step closer to creating an automated system that generates cashflow for you.

Then, your role will be to oversee operations and make sure everything runs smoothly.
